Summers END music festival was a massive 2 day festival in Calgary, AB put on by Aqua Audio and Connected events along with a few other smaller promoters. The festival was held at the BMO centre in the heart of downtown Calgary, a venue with a capacity of 7000.
Night 1 was kicked off with a banging set by dub step guru Borgore. Tons of “Bitches Cake” and ” Booty 4 Borgore” signs filling the crowd. Borgore got the crowd going for the next act, Datsik. Datsik has a massive following in Canada he definitely didn’t disappoint with a set infused with banging dub step and some new age trap tunes. The crowd went crazy for each drop, Datsik really got the night bumping.
Up next was one of the biggest DJs in the world, Calvin Harris. He opened with a remix of his song ” Sweet Nothing”, this remix had a heavy electro drop that the crowd didn’t expect but judging by the reaction, really fucking loved. He went on to play some of his banging classics, but what really caught my attention was a remix of summer festival anthem “Animals” by Martin Garrix. Just when you thought it was going to be the original that we have all heard a thousand times, it took a different turn with a more upbeat filled out sound. Calvin Harris was a definite highlight of the night and from watching the crowd, a lot of people were definitely there to see him.
Last but definitely not least was Dirtyphonics. I had seen a bit of Dirtyphonics at Shambhala music festival but only two of the four members were there. At Summers END the patrons were treated to all four members of the group which was fucking amazing. To see all four members bouncing back and forth jamming out having a great time was pretty special ending to night one of Summers END.
Night 2:
We arrived at Summers END on Night 2 as Infected Mushroom began to play on their visually stunning 3-D FungasAmongus stage. I was really looking forward to this as I had never seen but only heard of it. Two pods positioned on stage containing each of the DJs, onto a backdrop screen that took us on a 3D adventure through different realms and worlds. It looked pretty cool for their entire two hour set infused with lots of techno and electro tunes.
Up next was dirty dutch guru Chuckie and he brought the heat. He opened up with Make Some Noise vs Slow Down a Chuckie Ultra Mashup that got the crowd going crazy. It was awesome to see a pure electro DJ at the festival to get things going fast and heavy. Chuckie was a real highlight set of the weekend. After Chuckie, one of Swedish House Mafias members took the stage, Sebastian Ingrosso. His set was filled with classic big room progressive house music that people love to party to. The C02 cannons in front of him were constantly going off on each drop adding to the energy and intensity of the set. After Ingrosso finished there was an anxious 30 minute break while the stage hands set up the stage for the finished act, Destroid. Destroid is a live dub step group made up of Excision, Downlink and form Pendulum drummer KJ Sawka. The trio arrived on stage in what one can only call “Halo Gear” lit up with LEDs. Excision and Downlink dawning these crazy looking dub guitars they rocked into what I can only describe as ” intense dub infused metal music.” Something many people had never seen before but it was definitely interesting to see something different on stage.
All in all, Summers END was a success even with cancellation of Rusko and Bloody Beetroots. A great two day event in Calgary, AB. A city quickly becoming a stop on the map for the biggest in electronic dance music.
