Hayden James ‘Something About You’ (now signed to Virgin EMI from Future Classic)

HaydenJames_NickBowers_Shot1_300dpiCasino-style clubs and giant raves might seem the yardsticks de jour for electronic music artists in the US, but hearing your music on the radio while driving through America is a moment still enjoyed by a select few. It’s a club now joined by Australian artist Hayden James, though, when en route to Coachella his song ‘Something About You’ emerged from the car stereo.

Signed to Virgin EMI from Australia’s leading independent imprint, Future ClassicHayden James’ ‘Something About You’ has so far notched up over 10 million online streams (with support from leading YouTube channel, The Sound You Need), hit high rotation on specialist and commercial radio across Australia, and made the leap to daytime US radio. A highlight of both Coachella weekends, and one of the anthems for the forthcoming Ibiza season, expect this to be one of the tunes of summer 2015.

Tipped as one of the Southern Hemisphere’s hottest talents, Hayden James’ growing list of achievements is impressive: sold-out headline live shows in Australia, a 15 date headline North America tour (plus his Coachella debut), Hype Machine No.1s, and support slots with ODESZA. But, grand stats aside, its on record and live onstage where you’ll find the real magic in his (increasingly) French-touch inspired sound.

Currently putting the finishing touches to his debut album, James is influenced by artists including Jamie xx, Caribou, Daft Punk, SBTRKT, James Blake, and Toro Y Moi. He grew up in Sydney and cut his teeth on the local club scene, where he quickly became known as one of the city’s rising stars.

The Balearic pop of his debut track, ‘Permission To Love’, helped him scale the busy heights of the booming Australian electronic scene and to the pinnacle of the Hype M chart. An EP and a slew of remixes (Dillon Francis, ODESZA, RÜFÜS) later, and James had further established himself as a mainstay on both the Australian and international touring circuits.

IMS Engage 2014: Giorgio Moroder In Conversation with Pete Tong

_DS27036“My life changed when the Robots called”… Giorgio Moroder

Few people can play testament to a quote like this but the legendary producer of Donna Summer‘s ‘I Feel Love’ and co-producer of Daft Punk‘s Grammy Award winning album ‘Random Access Memories‘ certainly can. Accompanied by IMS partner Pete Tong, recently awarded an MBE by the Queen of England, this conversation had all the pedigree for the lovers of electronic music and much more.

Giorgio had the crowd in the palm of his hands from his first words, with a big round of applause when reciting the famous opening lines from Daft Punk’s ‘Giorgio By Moroder‘, a homage to him: “ My name is Giovanni Giorgio, but everyone calls me Giorgio.”

For the next 40 minutes, the two tastemakers tracked Moroder’s career from the 70s from working with Donna Summer and producing one of the first disco tracks “I Feel Love” right through to 2014, where he’s found a new calling as a DJ utilising Ableton Live. “DJing today is not what it was 20 years ago. The big DJs now, they are rock stars.”

Giorgio returned the questions to Tong about life in LA after his recent move. Tong said: “LA is inspiring, it‘s opening up many doors and it just feels right to be here.

A funny moment came during a discussion about Tong’s own music brand / platform “All Gone”, with Giorgio complementing the name and its origins from the infamous “Its All Gone Pete Tong” film, which resulted in the discussion of Tong’s “All Gone To Sea” cruise concept later in the year, which may or may not now feature Giorgio!
